Choose Acoustic Panels That Meet Design Specifications | Amazone By Furnitech

When acoustic panels are specified for an interior, it’s tempting to start with the finish, colour or pattern. After working across ceiling and acoustic projects for almost two decades, we’ve found that this is usually the wrong place to start.

The first question should be: What is actually happening acoustically in the room?

We’ve worked on very different environments, from auditoriums and theatres to institutional spaces and commercial interiors. A theatre, a classroom, a meeting room and a restaurant can all have completely different acoustic problems, even when the treatment appears to serve the same basic purpose. In some spaces, the priority is controlling reverberation and improving speech intelligibility. In others, it’s reducing reflections around a specific listening area. Sometimes, the challenge is finding enough treatment area without compromising the architectural design.

That experience has shown us that acoustic treatment needs to be tailored to the space, rather than approached as a one-size-fits-all solution. For architects, interior designers, contractors and anyone planning an acoustic treatment project, there are several factors worth considering before choosing a panel.

Start With the Acoustic Problem

Acoustic panels primarily deal with sound absorption inside a space. They can reduce reflections, echo and reverberation, making speech and other sounds easier to understand. This is different from sound insulation. If the problem is sound travelling from one room to another, simply putting absorptive panels on the walls will not necessarily solve it.

This distinction becomes particularly important when moving between different types of projects. Our work across auditoriums, theatres and institutional spaces has involved very different acoustic requirements, which is why the treatment cannot be selected purely from a product catalogue.

Before selecting a product, identify what you’re actually trying to improve:

  • Is excessive echo making the room feel harsh or uncomfortable?
  • Is poor speech clarity making it difficult for people to understand one another?
  • Does the space need better acoustic performance for music or media playback?
  • Is conversation difficult to follow in a busy room?
  • Is excessive reverberation affecting how the room sounds and functions?
  • Is sound travelling between spaces and creating a problem?

The answer can change the type, location and amount of acoustic treatment required.

Choose the Panel Materials for the Space

Different acoustic panels make sense for different design and performance requirements.

Polyester fibre acoustic panels, also known as PET panels, are lightweight sound-absorbing solutions that help reduce echo, reverberation and background noise in offices, classrooms, studios and commercial spaces.

Amazone By Furnitech offers PET panels in 9 mm and 12 mm thicknesses, with NRC ratings of up to 0.70 and 0.85, respectively. Available in more than 40 shades and in a standard size of 2440 x 1220 mm, the panels can be used on walls, partitions and ceilings, with CNC-cut options available for customised shapes and patterns.

Fabric-wrapped acoustic panels combine a high-density fibreglass core with a fabric finish to reduce echo, reverberation and unwanted reflections. They are suitable for offices, boardrooms, auditoriums, studios, classrooms and home theatres where both acoustic performance and appearance matter.

Amazone By Furnitech’s fabric wrapped panels are available in 600 x 600 mm, 1200 x 600 mm, 2100 x 600 mm and 1200 x 1200 mm sizes, with a standard thickness of 25 mm and an NRC of up to 0.95. They come in square or rectangular formats, with 12 jute-finish shades, offering flexibility for different interior designs.

Fibre glass wool panels are a practical choice where strong sound absorption is needed, particularly in auditoriums, theatres, studios, offices and educational spaces with noticeable reverberation.

Amazone By Furnitech’s fibre glass wool acoustic panels are available in 15 mm and 20 mm thicknesses, with sizes of 1200 x 300 mm and 1200 x 600 mm. They offer an NRC of up to 0.90, with square, tegular and microlook edge options, and are designed for standard ceiling grid systems.

MDF acoustic panels combine a wood-based finish with a perforated or grooved construction to help reduce reverberation. They are suitable for feature walls in hospitality spaces, auditoriums and offices where acoustic treatment is also part of the interior design.

Amazone By Furnitech’s MDF acoustic panels are available in 2440 x 128 mm and 2440 x 195 mm sizes, with 16 mm and 18 mm thicknesses, 10 shades, and options in MDF, HDF and HDMR. With an NRC of up to 0.70, they can be installed on walls or ceilings, with different grooves and patterns available to provide acoustic performance while creating a distinctive visual finish.

The better question isn’t:

‘Which acoustic panel is best?’

It’s:

‘What acoustic problem are you actually trying to solve?’

Don't Select a Panel Based Only on NRC

NRC is useful, but it shouldn’t be treated as the entire acoustic specification. Two products can have similar NRC figures and still behave differently depending on their thickness, mounting method, air gap, coverage and the frequencies that need to be controlled.

This is one of the areas where project experience matters. In larger acoustic installations, the product is only one part of the system. Where it is installed, how much area is treated and how the panels interact with the rest of the room all play a role.

Where Customisation Becomes Useful

One thing worth checking when comparing acoustic suppliers is how much customisation they can actually support. Standard panels may be enough for some projects, but spaces with complex ceiling layouts, geometric patterns or fixed architectural elements often need a more tailored approach.

Amazone By Furnitech’s CNC-cut PET acoustic panels can be produced in geometric or organic shapes, detailed patterns, perforations and functional cut-outs, with 41+ colour options. The panels can also be made as large-format wall or ceiling elements, with designs supplied in formats such as DXF, DWG, AI or SVG for precise CNC cutting.

For ceilings, custom acoustic clouds can be configured according to the required size, shape, thickness, colour and ceiling layout. They use polyester fibre or fibreglass, with adjustable cable or direct mounting, and can achieve an NRC of up to 0.95, depending on the material, thickness and design selected.

What Should Go Into the Specification?

Choosing acoustic panels is ultimately about balancing acoustic performance with interior design. Start by understanding the room, identifying where absorption is needed, and considering factors such as acoustic performance, thickness, frequency response, coverage and installation method. The finish, pattern and level of customisation can then be selected to complement the architectural concept rather than dictate it.

For projects that require both technical flexibility and design coordination, Amazone By Furnitech offers PET panels, fabric-wrapped, fibre glass wool and MDF acoustic panels, along with custom CNC-cut panels and custom acoustic clouds. The right choice will depend on the specific room and project requirements, but having different materials, finishes and customisation options can make it easier to achieve effective acoustic treatment that fits naturally into the interior. TL;DR

Effective acoustic design depends on matching the right panel to the room’s function, layout and performance requirements. NRC ratings, material thickness, mounting methods and treatment coverage all influence the outcome, while finishes, colours and custom designs help maintain the intended interior aesthetic. Amazone By Furnitech offers PET panels, fabric-wrapped, fibre glass wool and MDF panels, along with CNC-cut PET panels and custom acoustic clouds, giving architects and designers flexibility to meet both technical and visual specifications.
