Looking for Custom Acoustic Panels for a Commercial Interior Project

Looking for Custom Acoustic Panels for a Commercial Interior Project | Amazone By Furnitech

Some commercial interiors are acoustically difficult for a reason that has little to do with the number of people inside them. They simply contain too many hard surfaces. Glass partitions, exposed concrete, stone, metal, polished flooring and large open areas can create repeated sound reflections. Add phones, conversations, movement and equipment, and the room can start feeling louder than it actually is.

This is where custom acoustic panels become useful. Not because every commercial interior needs an elaborate acoustic installation, but because the treatment can be designed around the room instead of forcing the room to accommodate a standard solution.

After almost two decades of working across ceilings and room acoustics, we have dealt with projects ranging from institutional and theatre acoustics to suspended ceilings and other large interior applications across India. Our project portfolio includes Gujarat University, Gujarat High Court, Kevadia and P-Square Movieplex, among others. That kind of project exposure highlights one thing quite clearly: commercial interiors rarely have one universal acoustic requirement. The acoustic requirement changes considerably depending on how the commercial space is occupied and built.

Where Custom Acoustic Panels Make Sense

Open-plan offices

The common problem is speech build-up. Multiple conversations, calls and movement can become difficult to separate when sound keeps reflecting from glass, walls and ceilings. The improvement needed is usually better speech clarity, reduced reverberation and a more comfortable background sound level.

Corporate reception areas

Reception spaces often prioritise appearance, which means glass, stone, decorative surfaces and open layouts are common. The acoustic problem becomes noticeable when conversations from reception desks and waiting areas reflect across the space. The treatment needs to improve sound absorption without making the entrance look like a technical installation.

Retail stores and showrooms

Retail interiors can have large floor areas with hard flooring, display units, glass and high ceilings. They may sound perfectly acceptable when empty but become considerably more reflective once customers and staff occupy the space. The requirement here is usually controlled reverberation while preserving the visual identity of the store.

Studios and creative workspaces

Studios have more specific acoustic requirements because recording, monitoring or production can be affected by unwanted reflections. Here, panel placement becomes particularly important. The goal is to control the acoustic behaviour of specific areas rather than simply covering as many walls as possible.

Theatres and entertainment interiors

Sound quality is part of the function of the space itself. Reflections can affect speech, music and reproduced sound, so the treatment needs to be considered alongside the room geometry and existing acoustic construction.

The Interesting Part About Custom Acoustic Panels

Custom does not necessarily mean creating an unusual shape. Sometimes, it simply means making the acoustic treatment work with the architecture that has already been approved. A panel may need to:

  • Follow a particular wall dimension
  • Fit between doors or columns
  • Match a colour scheme
  • Work around lighting
  • Cover a large surface without looking repetitive
  • Introduce a specific texture
  • Coordinate with an existing ceiling system

That is where different acoustic materials can serve different design requirements.

Polyester fibre is particularly useful when a commercial project needs flexibility without making the acoustic treatment overly complicated. It can work across larger wall surfaces, introduce colour without changing the architecture, and be customised when the standard rectangular format is not enough.

The material is also lightweight, making it practical for projects where acoustic treatment needs to remain visually and physically unobtrusive. This makes polyester fibre panels suitable for offices, retail interiors, studios, theatres and other commercial spaces where broad acoustic coverage, colour selection and design flexibility are useful.

A suitable Amazone By Furnitech option

Amazone By Furnitech’s Polyester Fibre Acoustic Panels are available in 2440 x 1220 mm, with 9 mm and 12 mm thicknesses. The 9 mm panels are available in 45 shades, with NRC up to 0.70, while the 12 mm panels are available in 27 shades, with NRC up to 0.85. The panels are generally rectangular but can be CNC-cut for customised designs.

Amazone By Furnitech also offers CNC-cut PET acoustic panels using the same polyester fibre material. Completed CNC-ready designs can be produced in geometric forms, curves, perforations, layered patterns and other shapes, with functional cut-outs possible for elements such as mounting hardware and integrated LED channels. They also offer custom acoustic ceiling clouds as an overhead application of polyester fibre, allowing the material to be used where wall space is limited.

Fabric-wrapped acoustic panels make sense when the acoustic treatment needs to have a softer architectural appearance. Rather than making the acoustic surface a prominent design feature, fabric allows it to sit comfortably alongside furniture, wall finishes and other interior materials. This can be useful in offices, reception areas, theatres, studios and other commercial interiors where the wall treatment needs to look refined.

A suitable Amazone By Furnitech option

Amazone By Furnitech’s Fabric Wrapped Acoustic Panels use a high-density fibreglass acoustic core with a fabric finish. They are 25 mm thick and available in multiple sizes, with NRC up to 0.95 and 12 standard jute-finish shades.

MDF acoustic panels solve a different design problem. Some commercial interiors are built around timber, wood-look finishes and linear architectural detailing. MDF allows the acoustic treatment to follow the existing material language. It can therefore suit offices, showrooms, institutional interiors and other commercial projects where acoustic treatment needs to complement a wood-led architectural concept rather than introduce a contrasting material.

A suitable Amazone By Furnitech option

Amazone By Furnitech’s MDF Acoustic Panels are available in 2440 x 128 mm and 2440 x 192 mm formats, with 16 mm and 18 mm thicknesses, 10 shades, and MDF, HDF and HDMR options. They offer an NRC up to 0.70, and the panels can be used on walls or ceilings.

When the ceiling is already part of the acoustic problem, treating only the walls may not be enough. This is particularly relevant in commercial interiors with suspended ceiling systems, larger open areas, or spaces where the walls are already occupied by glass, displays, furniture or other finishes.

Fibre glass wool acoustic panels provide a different approach because they can become part of the ceiling system itself. This makes the system worth considering for offices, institutional interiors, theatres, studios and other commercial spaces where the ceiling grid is already an important part of the interior.

A suitable Amazone By Furnitech option

Amazone By Furnitech’s Fibre Glass Wool Acoustic Ceiling Panels are available in 1200 x 300 mm and 1200 x 600 mm sizes, with 15 mm and 20 mm thicknesses, and are offered in black or white. They are designed to integrate with suspended false-ceiling grids, with square and microlook edges for a cleaner finished appearance. The black and white options also allow the ceiling or wall treatment to either blend into or deliberately contrast with the surrounding design.

One Mistake Worth Avoiding

Customisation can sometimes become the focus of a project when the acoustic requirement should come first. A complicated pattern does not automatically make a room acoustically better. Before finalising the design, it is worth establishing:

  • Where is the sound reflecting?
  • How much of the room will normally be occupied?
  • Is the main problem reverberation, speech clarity or sound transfer between spaces?
  • How much acoustic coverage is actually required?

These questions help determine whether the project needs wall panels, ceiling treatment or a combination of both. One important distinction should also remain clear: sound absorption and sound isolation are not the same thing. Acoustic panels can help control reflected sound inside a room, but they are not a substitute for a properly designed sound-isolation assembly when the problem is sound travelling through walls or partitions.

Let the Space Guide the Acoustic Treatment

Commercial acoustic treatment does not need to look the same from project to project. An open office may suit lightweight coloured polyester panels, a reception area may call for a softer fabric wrapped finish, a timber-led showroom may benefit from MDF, while larger institutional or entertainment spaces may need both ceiling and wall treatments. The right material should follow the room’s requirements, not the other way around.

Amazone By Furnitech is one range worth considering when a project needs this flexibility. Their polyester fibre, fabric-wrapped, MDF and fibre glass wool acoustic panels offer different acoustic and design options, while CNC-cut PET acoustic panels and custom ceiling clouds provide further flexibility when standard formats do not fit the project.
